GAP {Dressmaking}

Friday, 7 June 2013

I made a white T-Shirt - at the end of the day there is nothing else to say, my first piece of garment is a white T-Shirt. So how am I going to make this exciting. First of all, I MADE (on my own, with my little hands, no teacher) a T-shirt, for me, at my size - that I am actually wearing.Secondly, it is in jersey and that is pretty good going because it is not the sort of thing I sew everyday. Finally it is the start of new wardrobe, I can feel it!

Fabric:  4 way stretch cotton lycra jersey from TissuFabrics (here) - so soft!
Size: I am currently a 12/14 in the UK, and 42 in EU - I made a size 14 (reducing the sleeves a lot but not the body as I like my Tshirts quite long) - and I probably could have got away with a 12.
Result: Love it, totally wearable, and really flattering, much more than an ordinary white Tshirt. I impressed Mr MiH as well!

I learnt a lot from the pattern. There are a lot of firsts here: sewing with twin needles (breaking one in the process); using twill tape; using my serger properly; making a collar; making a TShirt ...

And I also made a lot of mistakes - probably all the ones you can think about and more: the wrong side of the fabric is my right side (but I was consistent with that mistake); Putting the binding at the bottom the wrong way round, not aligning the binding at the bottom, not using my serger properly...

This is a wearable muslin I suppose. I will get better at making those with practice I am sure. The great thing is that I have the pattern now so I can make as many as I want in whatever knit fabric I want. I already some grey fabric for the next one.

Not sure what pose I was going for there
The fly was not meant to be in the picture
So here we are, my own GAP advert - white Tshirt and GAP jeans, Zara cardigan though...
You will also remember my fashion {Recreate} post - only a skirt away now...

When I make the next one I will probably document the process a bit more, so who's up for making one with me?

I love your style {Recreate}

For those of you following me on pinterest, you may have noticed my 'I love your style' board. It is full of wonderful images, but I have never actually done anything with/about any of them. So here is a new series of posts - trying to recreate a look MiH style - finding patterns (knitting, sewing) or fabrics to match a look..

So let's start with boho chic. I love this outfit - it is timeless, seems so comfortable, yet effortlessly chic. The green of the skirt is amazing.

To recreate this boho chic look (sort of):

1. For the top, my first choice of pattern would be RENFREW (by Sewaholic). There are too many to list them all, but do check those made by Jane in double knit; Jo's in spandex knit, the chevron version by Lauren, the review by Gorgeous Fabrics, and Amanda's twin needles sewing tips. For a more casual look, you could also try the BRIAR SWEATER by Megan Nielsen. Megan is hosting a sew-along at the moment, and there is a discount on the pattern. For more inspiration, check out the MN Flickr Pool.

2. Pleated skirt don't really suit my body shape, so I focused on long bohemian skirts. Two patterns are from the March 2013 BURDA style magazine (no 122 and 123). For a more formal-ish I would also consider the HOLLYBURN skirt (by Sewaholic) - in a longer version - there is a sewalong going on at the moment.
