Yarn with Attitude :: Fyberspates ::

Tuesday, 8 March 2016

Happy Tuesday everyone! When I started searching for ethical yarns I had no idea I would find so many amazing yarns. Literally no idea. And I just do not have enough time to knit with all of them - but rest assure that I do try! And today I am bringing to you a brand I have a massive crush on - Fyberspates. I had seen the name a few times, on IG mostly, but never realised that it was a UK brand (I thought it was Australian, not sure why but here we are). I found it through this shop when I was looking for a DK yarn for knitting Nessa. And I was just amazed by it and the colourway I found (Tweed Imps).

Fast forward a month, a bit of research about Fyberspates under my belt, I actually met Jeni at the Craft Hobby + Stitch International Show . I was slightly starstruck (sorry Jeni) but managed not to totally lose it, and showed her Nessa in progress. I got in touch with her - to discuss a bit more about her yarn. I knew she was really keen on offering an ethical yarn - I just had no idea to which extent this was.

When I ask her about her yarn, and attention to worker and animal welfare, I had no idea the extent to which she had considered all aspects for her supply chain. Here was her reply (I could not explain better)...

'All my commercial yarns are made in Peru, and dyed there as well. In terms of dyeing, I visited the dyeing place, and basically its an enlarged version of what I had at home, its a lovely set up, and the girls who dye the yarn work in a nice environment, with the hand paints they sit around a table and dye yarn and chat, its a really nice ethos. Peru have very strict regulations about dyeing and processing, which means the dyes have to be highly regulated, currently the dyes they use come from Germany, as they are very high quality and non toxic.

In addition we use Peruvian merino, which is sourced from small scale producers whose lively hood is the sheep, and so they tend to look after them very well, the mill also provide a lot of education to the farmers and offer education programmes for the children, we are also working with them on a new handspun yarn which supports women in rural communities, this provides work and income for them (this yarn is available through Chester Wool co which Fyberspates trades through). We never source yarns from Australia because they use Museling on the sheep, we are guaranteed that this practice does not happen in Peru because of the small scale farming methods.

And finally… we have switched over to Oxybiodegradeable packaging, and whilst it is an improvement on the previous plastic, its not the absolute perfect packaging, however, I always think of it as a process, it took me a good 3 years of asking for better packaging. If we say yes to what the mill is offering, when they are in talks with their packaging sources, they know that we will pay extra for something eco, its our vote as it were, they know then that if something better comes along, we will most likely switch to it, if we don’t show our vote, then if the mill get offered better and better products, they will just say to the packaging manufacture, 'no one was interested, we offered it to our customers, no one took it up', so for me its a process to improvement if that makes sense.

Amazing, right! Jeni has really taken a holistic view. And of course the yarn knits like a dream, and has a great lustrous sheen to it. I cannot wait to finish Nessa to try another yarn, I have my eye on some Vivacious DK in Pebble Beach or try the Cumulus yarn.

And, as she is super nice, Jeni has kindly agreed to give one of my readers a chance to try her yarn. Here is your chance to bag yourself a skein of your choice! So which one will it be?

Here is how to enter the giveaway (1 entry per person)

One month - a Giveaway

Saturday, 20 December 2014

Little Baby MiH has been with us for a month and I cannot really remember how life was without my 2 boys. I am not going to lie I have had my ups and downs - and in fact a lot of downs (well lack of sleep downs). But a month on, Little Baby MiH and I have managed to spend time together and found our feet a little bit. And this is something to celebrate... with a giveaway!

I don't buy many books anymore - I get them from the library - unless all my favourite designers are in one book! I And I want to share the love of Made by Hand by Lena Corwin.

It is full of craft tutorials - crochet, knitting, bead weaving, sewing, dyeing. And the tutorials are full of pictures - my kind of tutorial!

And I do love that front picture!

I happen to have two of these books - which even though I like it, may be too many. So here is your opportunity to grab yourself a copy for Christmas.

You have 3 chances to enter the giveaway:

Let me know how you follow my blog in the comment box.

Vintage Chevron Quilt | A finish and Giveaway {Quilting}

Friday, 8 November 2013

Beware this is going to be a post full of pictures and only few words.

Pattern: Giant Chevron Quilt from The Elven Garden
(available on Craftsy or Etsy)or check out
the giveaway at the end of the post!
Fabrics: The 70s section fabric selection is detailed here, a collection of
low volume fabrics in cream and Kona white for the background
Quilting: Stitched in the ditch around the chevron patterns,
and highlighted with brown red hand quilting (Guterman).
Binding: I bought my bias tape – I opted for a very narrow binding so
it did not overtake the whole quilt. I used a blanket stitch
beforehand so it shows underneath the bias tape.
Size: The finished quilt size is 140 cm x 185 cm
Result: This is a great pattern – so versatile, just look at all the different
testers’versions. It is a great beginners’ pattern
as well (you don’t have to make it more complicated like I did).

This is the quilt I am most proud of. Technically I have still a lot more to learn about quilting, but I think I really have found my style and managed to capture my vision in this quilt. It was a bit more complicated because of the stamp collection, but totally worth the effort – it does blend colours well – you will see definitely more of this technique.

So it is GIVEAWAY time! You want to make this quilt – yes you do! Jess has been nice enough to giveaway  TWO patterns (in pdf form)!! Whoohoo! Who is in?

You have 3 chances to enter the giveaway:

1. This giveaway is open to my followers only - old and new.
Let me know how you follow my blog in the comment box.
2. Like the MiH Facebook page - and leave me a second comment.
3. Follow me on twitter, tweet about the giveaway,
and/or follow me on Instagram (natmadeinhome) –
and come back to leave me a third comment

The giveaway ends Friday 15 November at 12 noon (UK time). Please, please, please leave me a way to contact you if you are a no-reply blogger Good luck!

Thrilling Mittens + a Giveaway | Le Challenge {Knitting}

Monday, 14 October 2013

I know I say this every time it comes round, but every time it is a last minute finish, and I am surprised I have an entry for le challenge. To be honest for a while I thought I would only make one mitten - at the end of the day Michael Jackson (Thriller - easy link right) only had one glove - but I always thought that was a bit weird, and not really useful if you intend to wear them.

Unfortunately this is not a crystal-encrusted glove and it is unlikely to fetch $200,000. I did try to replicate the sparkling effect though thanks to the Anchor Metallic thread. The mittens are a bit fancier with a lace pattern - adding a thrilling element, don't you think?

Pattern: Cafe au Lait mittens (free pattern on Ravelry)
Yarn: 3-ply white yarn that I had in my stash without labelling but probably Sidar (half a ball) and 1 and a bit Anchor Artiste Metallic ball (shade 301)
Needle Size: DPNs 4 mm
Modifications: Made less repeats of the pattern but added some ribbing rounds at the top - similar changes for the thumbs. Ribbing is ktbl1, p1.
Difficulty Rating: It is an easy pattern although you need to pay attention. It is a quick knit (I finished a mitten in one afternoon).
Result: I love the lace pattern, I will be using it again - I am not sure where but the result is amazing. My biggest issue is the size. I have small hands, and I know that (I usually take child size glove) and I should have adapted the pattern accordingly. After a lot of Umming and Arring I followed the pattern, and I should not have. So the downside is that I have to make a new pair for my freakishly small hands, on the upside you get a chance to own this pair!

Steampunk Chandelier + GIVEAWAY {Jewellery making}

Tuesday, 7 May 2013

I had wanted to make my own earrings for a long time - I even found cute kits (you need to start somewhere), but never took the time to sit down, read the instructions and make them. But what does one do at 6.30 am in the morning - in my house the boys are asleep (especially Baby MiH - he is a snoozing machine) whilst I catch up with my projects - and this morning it was all about jewellery making.

Why today I hear you ask? Well I needed something to go with a certain project that is finally finished (spoilers on facebook) and will appear on Friday.

It was not easy to find kits I actually liked on internet. I came across Spoilt Rotten (they are not sponsoring me by the way), and just loved the Steampunk Chandelier kit. It is totally my style and seemed fairly easy to do - as well as good value (if I were to fail). Unfortunately I cannot see this model on it on their website.. This what you get in the kit ...

I also watched this video for the wire wrapped loop. For those who made earrings before, you will notice that my loops above the beads are a bit more... creative, I did not have chain nose pliers. But I like the result, so totally fine with that.

I spent probably an hour and a half to make the pair - Mr MiH even had time to take pictures in the morning before he left for work. I was pretty chuffed. So do you want to have a go at jewellery making? I bought 2 kits, but the green of the second one is not exactly what I was looking for. I love the style, but I don't have anything to wear with this green.

So I thought I would give the chance to one of my followers to have a go at jewellery making.

The giveaway is open internationally to followers only - old and new. Leave me ONE comment, letting me know how you follow the blog and what you would be wearing the earrings with.

The giveaway will remain open until Sunday 12 May at 5pm - the winner announced that evening. Good luck everyone!

Tapenade {knitting} + GIVEAWAY

Wednesday, 13 March 2013

I only took one project with me on holiday (how to choose?) - I don't know how much progress I will be making, but I just need to have something with me. It is reassuring - my fingers may go numb otherwise, you never know. However it is not a small project, in fact it is quite huge (but more on that when I am back). I really want to finish it, so any progress I make will be great.

So tapenade and no recipe posted? No, tapenade is how I described the colour of the yarn I hoped Steph at SixSkeins would dye for me (using organic merino silk wool, light worsted DK yarn).  It is the same yarn type I used for the Shale Baby Blanket made for Baby MiH. And, well, let me tell you I love it.

The actual colour is even better than the colour I described/had in mind. The knitting fabric shows it beautifully. Can you see the subtle variegated yarn? And the yarn is also a dream to knit. And guess what? Steph can make the same colour to you if you ask her too!

And well she is so lovely that is offering a hand dyed yarn for one of my readers! Lucky you! A real shame I cannot enter my own giveaway! A skein of aran in Royal turquoise - the yarn is a blend of baby Alpaca, Merino and Bamboo. And you get 167 metres (way enough to make a vintage headband maybe?). The recommended needle size is 4.5mm/5.5mm.

So here is how the giveaway works. You can enter the giveaway up to 4 times:

1. Leave me a comment on the blog (maybe what you would be doing with the yarn) - if you are a non-reply blogger, please leave your email address
2. If you are a follower, you get a second entry (leave a separate comment)
3. Like Steph's facebook page, and come back and let me know by a separate comment
4. Share the love of the giveaway: on your blog, twitter (copy us @noaslibellule and @sixskeins) or other social network - and leave a separate comment to tell me.

The giveaway is open until Wednesday next week - ending at 5pm GMT. It is open internationally.

*THE GIVEAWAY IS NOW CLOSED*

Knitted Xmas {Giveaway}

Thursday, 6 December 2012

I am still around, and still very much pregnant. Who knew I could get even bigger than I was! At least this gave me time to finish the Christmas Giveaway I had planned for this month! And I am quite pleased with it, I hope you are too. I know all of you are starting to decorate your tree, I do not have a tree yet, it was baby first, then tree - but I may have to reconsider over the weekend.

So what can you get this month - 3 knitted balls made by my little hands Made in Home style! They are of different colours featuring the same Scandinavian pattern. So what do you think? Could these be the ornaments your tree was missing?

Here is a close up of the balls, the colours are pretty much true to what you will get. They weigh 30g each, and they are soft - so baby-friendly!

So here is how the giveaway works. You can enter the giveaway up to 3 times:

1. You need to be a follower - leave me a comment and let me know how you follow my blog - if you are a non-reply blogger, please leave your email address
2. Tweet about the giveaway and let me know when you have done so (or tweet me @NoasLibellule)
3. Like my facebook page, and come back and let me know

The giveaway is open until Tuesday next week - ending at 5pm GMT.

I will ship internationally.

Good luck everyone!

The Charm Pack Giveway is now closed. Mr MiH was in charge of choosing the winner, the old fashion way. Many thanks to those who took part and all your sweet comments.

There can be only one winner, and it is: Alyce at Blossom Heart Quilts. Congratulations Alyce, I just sent you an email and your charm pack will be on its way soon!

Sorry to all the other participants, I intend to run another giveaway at the beginning of December, so come and check it out!

Charm Pack {Giveaway}

Monday, 5 November 2012

Here we are, I am officially on maternity leave and I am THE snoozing machine (dixit Mr MiH). I have not been a lot over the weekend except sleeping - and again today. Is that what maternity leave is like?

However I did manage to get together a very special charm pack - the one made of Baby MiH's room fabrics (some that I have used, will use, or was going to use but decided not to but still love). Some of my favourite designers are there: Lotta Jansdotter (of course), Rashida Coleman-Hale, Leah Duncan..

The charm pack is made up of 20 different fabrics, two charms of each fabric so a 40-piece pack. I put some solids that go with the overall theme.

The giveaway is open until Friday 9 November until 7pm GMT. Good luck everyone!
