Previously Discarded: The Victoria Blazer {Dressmaking}

Monday 3 March 2014

There are probably a few reasons why I discarded the Victoria Blazer - probably because it is scary to think of making a blazer by myself and also because I tend to avoid wearing blazers at all cost, even for work. I suppose this one also has a boy-ish look to it which is not necessarily flattering on me.

Victoria Blazer by By Hand London

Anyway, discarded. A lot of people were raving about By Hand London patterns and I decided not to follow suit.... Until, this version came along...

A coat version - with no collar - totally my sort of coat! This is Oona's version for Project Sewn, and I just fell in love with that whole outfit (check it out here) but the coat has really caught my eye - and yes I bought the pattern then and there.

So what are the main changes:
- there is a tutorial to follow to make the modifications - clever By Hand London ladies!
- the fabric Oona used, in her own words...  'is quilted-- but not double layered, more like the quilting stitches were just on a thick cotton. Both sides are quite soft & pretty, so it didn't need a lining'. Yes, people no lining! BUT she does mention the 'hong kong finish', does that ring any bells? that takes 86 hours, maybe lining is something I should learn.. Anyhow the fabric is awesome, there is no denying it.

So guess what, I am in search of fabric...

Have you made the Victoria blazer? Or would you have discarded it?

  1. hahaha yes that hk finish is tedious! but soooo pretty when you're done. altho to be honest, mine might be a bastardized version of it-- i graded each seam, machine stitched bias tape to the longer seam, pressed it to one side, and blindstitched it down. did the same for raw edges too. totally worth it, you're gonna love it!

  3. I've made this pattern three times, once for myself and twice for other people, and really love it! It's much quicker to complete than a traditional blazer as there aren't any facings and you don't even have to interface anything (I always forget how long it takes to interface a million little pieces). The other nice thing about it is that the fit is really relaxed, so you don't have to go nuts with muslin-making to get a good fit.

  5. As much as I love the idea of an oversized blazer, on me they simply aren't flattering, so I probably would have discarded. That coat, on the other hand... that is most certainly worth making, what an incredible piece. So sorry I haven't had a chance to reply to your email yet but I love the idea you mentionned. Will reply tomorrow morning at the latest :)

  6. I think that's the thing about sewing patterns. You don't know the fit and how it'll fit your body. Had to Google that term, Hong Kong finish. Oh boy was that interesting.
