Steampunk Chandelier + GIVEAWAY {Jewellery making}

Tuesday, 7 May 2013

I had wanted to make my own earrings for a long time - I even found cute kits (you need to start somewhere), but never took the time to sit down, read the instructions and make them. But what does one do at 6.30 am in the morning - in my house the boys are asleep (especially Baby MiH - he is a snoozing machine) whilst I catch up with my projects - and this morning it was all about jewellery making.

Why today I hear you ask? Well I needed something to go with a certain project that is finally finished (spoilers on facebook) and will appear on Friday.

It was not easy to find kits I actually liked on internet. I came across Spoilt Rotten (they are not sponsoring me by the way), and just loved the Steampunk Chandelier kit. It is totally my style and seemed fairly easy to do - as well as good value (if I were to fail). Unfortunately I cannot see this model on it on their website.. This what you get in the kit ...

I also watched this video for the wire wrapped loop. For those who made earrings before, you will notice that my loops above the beads are a bit more... creative, I did not have chain nose pliers. But I like the result, so totally fine with that.

I spent probably an hour and a half to make the pair - Mr MiH even had time to take pictures in the morning before he left for work. I was pretty chuffed. So do you want to have a go at jewellery making? I bought 2 kits, but the green of the second one is not exactly what I was looking for. I love the style, but I don't have anything to wear with this green.

So I thought I would give the chance to one of my followers to have a go at jewellery making.

The giveaway is open internationally to followers only - old and new. Leave me ONE comment, letting me know how you follow the blog and what you would be wearing the earrings with.

The giveaway will remain open until Sunday 12 May at 5pm - the winner announced that evening. Good luck everyone!

I bought a beading loom some time ago following seeing these bracelets. But let me tell you when to making something we did not get on - first I had the wrong size of beads, and had to buy new ones - but to be fair I decided not to check what I actually needed.. And then I could not set it up properly. A few youtube videos and tutorials later, we are on, and my new bracelet is finally in progress as we speak!

Just to note, I used to have a loom when I was much younger (pre internet that is) and remember this to be distinctly easy (ie I could not find any help on youtube and managed it). I have officially regressed! However the lack of sleep will explain why I had so many issues to set it up and understand the concept.

The beads I used are Miyuki Seed Beads Size 11 bought here. I have seen a lot of tutorials with bigger size beads - even wooden ones. I love crafts that are this versatile!

I may have to make a sparkly feather-Harpo like one next! I kept it simple for the first one (I did try a bigger bracelet and failed), but there is no stopping me now!
