Advice for new bloggers: Blogging and Social Media

Saturday, 13 July 2013

Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog! I was so happy when Beth asked me to participate in the advice for new bloggers blog hop. It is great to read what other bloggers have learnt from blogging - and how they go about it. Today I want to share with you how I use other social media platforms when blogging.

The blog - Made in Home, my shop window

I started this blog a year ago now - I was then 5 month pregnant with Baby MiH. Getting pregnant was a big change in my life (the actual pregnancy and having a baby). I felt that my first blog did not reflect my aspirations anymore. I wanted a space where I could share my makes but also show how they fitted into my life. I posted about Made in Home in my home, and I started posting outfits mixing handmade and highstreet purchases.

I see my blog as my shop window - where I present all my projects. It is static in a way - you prepare a post, write it, post it - and it stays there. I do go back to some posts, to add some links to further posts that could be of interest or tutorials to make it easier for a reader to find the trail of posts.

It is obviously the most important tool to show your projects. Sometimes I have to remind myself that it is the craft and project first, and the blogging afterwards - and not making a project for a post.

The MiH facebook page - the shop owner

I also have a facebook page. I use facebook a lot so it was fairly obvious to me that I needed a facebook page for Made in Home. It took me a while to understand how I could incorporate it into my blogging experience, but that all changed when I found out how to upload pictures from my phone. I was able to post progress on some projects, sneek peak at finishes and share some personal pictures (ie pictures of Baby MiH). I feel like I can share much more of my personality, and in fact I use this account as much as my personal one.

It also enabled me to receive quick feedback on some projects, or ask for advice without having to blog about it. I try to upload one picture a day on a project I am working on or something I am doing during the day - in addition to the latest news on the blog.

Of course, not everyone uses facebook - my husband is on it, but never checks his account. I have friends who have decided not to be on it full stop. It is fine, I just find it the best platform ever - especially when your family and friends are abroad.

Twitter - the marketing and texting tool

Ah, to be or not to be on twitter. Does it really matter? I am on twitter - in fact I have a work account (that I am not using at the moment) and a blog/personal account. Do I use it often? I have phases when I am on it non-stop and then days when I will not look at it all. I use it a lot to tell people that they inspired me, or how I used my latest purchase from a shop - ie like a marketing tool to link up my makes to the wider world. But also to connect with bloggers more directly and quickly - like a text for bloggers.

I find twitter quite frustrating in the sense that since starting this post, I have already 60 tweets that have been published, and I will not have time to read them all (and I don't follow that many people). So anchoring a tweet by using @ is worth doing you ensure the person will see it (in the CONNECT section); tweeting a few times about the same post is also worth doing - who knows at what time your followers read your tweets.

Flickr - The wider community

I must admit Flickr is the one platform I use the least. I only go on it to check progress in the bees I am in and add pictures, but that is about it. I am not sure I am the best person to provide advice on Flickr but I thought I would mention it - and maybe someone in the comment box can shed more light on this!

Pinterest - Categorising

I have one board dedicated to my makes and tutorials, so people can pin them and found them more easily. I use it as well to refer to other people tutorials. And you can spend so much time on pinterest!

And that is where it stops for me - it is actually quite hard to keep up with all of those, as well as making all my projects! But it is so much fun, and you get so much back!

Let's Get Acquainted ...

Monday, 12 November 2012

Hello everyone, my name is Nat, and welcome to my blog. It is the final week at Plum and June's "Let's Get Acquainted" blog hop.  And it is my turn to tell you a bit more about me and Made in Home, the place where I share all my Made in Home projects, quilted, knitted, crocheted, cross-stitched, upcycled, baked...

Me wearing the Contemporary Beanie Hat
So I am French, and have been living mostly in Britain since 1998. I was only supposed to spend 2 months here, improve my English, and then go back to my undergraduate studies in France. I came for two months, decided I loved it so much that I could not go back to France - gave up my French undergrad studies and became an au pair for a year. I did go back to studying though - and managed to get a lot of acronyms after my name in the meantime (I have a BSc, MSc and PhD). So much for my parents worrying I would never go back to studying.

I met my husband nearly 8 years ago (our anniversary is some time this month, we are a bit fuzzy on the actual date), we got married two years and half ago and we are now expecting our first child (very beginning of December) - and the little one will be 3/4 French and 1/4 British. I do/did have a full-time job in finance, and I am now on maternity leave, as Baby MiH could come at any time apparently - although it would be really handy if he could wait until his due date...

I am slightly bigger now...
So I mentioned that this blog is not just about quilting, although it is more and more present in my life at the moment. But I am first a knitter - as this is the craft my Grandma taught me when I was little, I learnt how to sew in classes my Mum sent me to as a teenager, crochet came much later (3 years ago), baking sort of come with being French and my sweet tooth. Then I learnt most of the other crafts on internet, thanks to blogs or youtube videos - and the learning is never ending.

Let me share a bit more...

       - My quilting tips -

Spend time preparing your fabric and cutting accurately. I think I realised this way too late, but the final result is SO much better. It is therefore key to change your blades - do it now, it is quite expensive, but so much better!

Also I only use some of my scissors for fabric cutting and sewing related activities, and do not use them for paper, in the kitchen etc - so they last longer.

       - Favourite fabric -

If you have been on my blog before, you will already know that I am a big fan of Lotta Jansdotter, Rashida Coleman-Hale and most recently Leah Duncan.

       - Favorite book -

I love all the Harry Potter, and more recently the Hunger Games triology. Otherwise crime novels (Agatha Christie is one of my favourite authors).

       - Favorite quilting tool -

My rotary cutter - with brand new blades!

       - Blogging tip -

Good Pictures - it is harder and harder to get some good natural light at the moment (short days and autumn) but it is worth spending the time getting nice pictures - makes it nicer for you and other to read. I think..

Thanks to Beth at Plum and June for organizing this amazing blog hop - It is totally what blogging is all about for me, finding a community of like-minded people with whom I can share tips, my projects and will get support from. And it was in fact great to meet some fellow bloggers over the summer!

The cut, the welcomed and the thrifted - Purchases Galore

The Cut

Ever wondered what a pile of 122 charms looked like? I no longer do. Last night I spent a couple of hours making it happen (yes I am a bit slow but at 6 months and a half pregnant - well it was not easy) . I used the Oh Fransson! Charm Sqaures tutorial. My charm pack is now off to the States to take part in the LVSwap! Cannot wait to receive my charm pack back.

The Welcomed

I won two giveaways recently 9thank you, thank you, thank you) and received fabric and thread! Got this gorgeous fabric for SkyeReve fabrics (the giveaway was hosted by Plum and June). I love the red fabrics - beautiful!

And finally I will get a chance to try the Aurifil Thread thanks to Freshly Pieced! The orange thread is going to be perfect for the Totally Groovy QAL. Cannot wait! I saw so many raving reviews, I have high expectations.

The Thrifted

Oh and I have a new addiction - Ebay buying (ok no exactly new new, but I had calmed down for a bit)... This can only get worse with me spending more time at home come November. But look at those how could I let them go?

I got this cross-stitch panel (not exactly sure what it was meant for) - made by hand (yes, someone spent hours on this) for £2.99. It is not even the price of the fabric it is stitched on! Clearly this has been done by an experienced cross-stitcher (look at the back it is spotless). This is probably going to become the cover of a cushion for my new hobby room. Need to clean it first..

I bought this Welsh blanket for £3.99. It is in very good condition, thinner than what I expected - but will make a perfect tablecloth for Christmas time.

And some more fabric - Vintage Liberty (yes there is Vintage AND Liberty in the same name). Probably the size of a fat quarter maybe a bit bigger - £4.90 (well with Liberty and Vintage it was bound to be expensive).. My mother-in-law is quite into Art Nouveau/Art Decor so I am hoping to make something for her using the fabric.

So here we are I am TOTALLY on my way to de-stash as you can see, making real progress... Mr MiH is not impressed.
