1'45 {Knitting}

Tuesday, 15 January 2013

I was not meant to post today but I have a new knitting gadget - and one that is going to help me save LOADS of time - and I had to share. I used to be scared of buying skeins of yarn rather than balls (although it never actually stopped me) - but this is it! I can now make cakes in 1 minute 45 seconds. Yes, I have timed myself!

I will be able to stack these little ones up and have an organised hobby space!

Below is the one I bought. There is nothing fancy to it - all manual. Cost me £17.50 on Ebay (from the UK), totally worth it.

So I suppose I have no excuse to get on with a project that I talked about back in August... Hmmm clearly still avoiding making a knitted garment for myself. No excuse now, all cakes are made and waiting to be knitted!

(Edit 16/01/2013) Following Tanya's comment, I thought I should add that I use a yarn swift as well, it probably explains the time.

  1. I have a winder, similar to the one you have pictured, but I find I prefer to just wind my balls by hand. Especially fingering or DK weight, and when I have tried winding lace weight, it gets all tangled :(

    But then, I did spend 3 hours winding a skein by hand the other day, maybe I need more practice? :)

  3. Ahhhh, my mom had one, she also had a knitting machine and I used to spend many a happy hour winding wool and listening to the fast progress of her machine - fond memories :)

    Thank you so much for following my Blog, I am gladly following your Blog also.

  4. 1min45 is pretty impressive! do you use a swift as well? I have both and its still takes me a minimum 5mins per skein and that's only if I manage not to get it tangled (I like to go fast.....)

  5. I love my ball winder. The little yarn cakes it makes are so cute and easy to use. When I bought the swift though it made it even easier. I LOVE my Sunflower Swift, it a beautiful object as well as a useful one.

  7. Oh, I have been toying with the idea of buying one forever! I love the looks of yarn cakes all stacked up, and 1'45 sounds better then the usual hour it takes me to wind my yarn into a ball!

  8. Oh wow, you wound skeins by hand usually? Old school and so patient! After having to wind at least five hanks of yarn at the LYS, I called my husband and told him I was buying a swift and ball winder after making a few ppl wait. I felt so bad. What great investments they are.
